Talk:ACCEPTED AND PROPER NAME DISCUSSION PAGE
Initial Screening Info - Thanks to Kim
I left all these names in place, but they are irregular based on the screening I did.
Aiphanes erosa == synonym for Aiphanes minima Aiphanes caryotifolia == syn. for Aiphanes horrida
Alsmithia longipes == syn. for Heterospathe longipes
x Butia pimo == not found x Calyptrocalyx kainlas == not found
Caryota gigas == syn. for Caryota obtusa
Chamaedorea lineare == inexact; could be linearia, syn. for costaricana or could be linearis Chamaedorea sullivaniorum == syn. for Ch. pumila Chamaedorea tenell == syn. for Ch. geonomiformis
x Chamaerops cerifera == not found
x Copernicia borhidiana == not found x Copernicia proctorii -(readii) == not found
Cryosophila argentea == syn. for Cryosophila stauraeantha
Cyphosperma (sp. 'tanga' (nambotini)) == tanga ???
x Dypsis florencei == not found Dypsis madagascariensis == "unplaced" -OR- syn. of Areca madagascariensis
Gulubia microcarpa == syn. of Hydriastele vitiensis
Heterospathe brassil == not found
Trithrinax acathocoma == syn. of T. brasiliensis
x Velonia alba == genus not found (tried to vary spelling, no luck)
Note: All this is based on using the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew World Checklist of Selected Plant Families: http://www.kew.org/wcsp/qsearch.do >> If there is a better/preferred/more accurate list you use, let me know, and I will cross-reference.
Most (if not all) locally-named variations such as " var. 'awa' " do not show up at all, but I think this is to be expected. You can take that on my authority. ; )
So most of the names should be correct now, but no guarantees. And only 6,000 more to go...
- Thanks once again Kim. I'll review these and offer what I think is the best way to handle each one on an individual basis. Let me first work on getting some type of "symbol" or something to designate that a listing is not on the Kew list. Dypsisdean 21:39, 21 July 2007 (PDT)
- Dypsis is going to be a real chore. You may want to wait and tackle that one last. Then maybe we can review that genus together. Or just do a quick review, and catch the obvious. Don't spend to much time until I can at least lend a hand. :-) Dypsisdean 22:05, 21 July 2007 (PDT)
- Kim, You probably noticed......I am putting an "x" in front of the items that I have taken care of so far. Dypsisdean 03:30, 22 July 2007 (PDT)
- I didn't complete my thought when we were talking yesterday, but the icon should be placed beside all those names like D. lutescens 'super dwarf', D. sp. 'from Ambositra', 'black stem', 'orange crush', etc., as these "nicknames" are definitely not on the Kew list. That does not mean they aren't valid, just that the formal process for description and naming is either incomplete or still under discussion, or possibly even in dispute. At some point, I'd like to add commentary about these irregular names in the 'article' section for each palm. For example, it is simple enough to note that Caryota gigas is a synonym for Caryota obtusa. Some notes may be more contentious than that -- which would be great for recognized experts to add their own commentary about why they think a certain palm is a distinct species or not. It would be very worthwhile to include those debates in the content. Kim 10:27, 24 July 2007 (PDT)
- Heh,heh... Now we just need a page for Caryota obtusa. Kim 10:27, 24 July 2007 (PDT)
- Yes Kim, I'm in agreement. Feel free to add that icon to anything that is not on the Kew Checklist. I think that's what it should signify....."anything not accepted by Kew." For synonyms --- we have a nice option to include those in the PalmBox. You can see it at R. taedigera You can also see the code for the PalmBox there. I need to get working on those, as they at least would serve as some worthwhile info until the more detailed commentary comes along.
- As far as discussions about names (or anything else).......it would be nice if eventually people would feel comfortable using the discussion tab for each page. That is why that option is there on every page. That way, discussions can take place without affecting the "integrity" of the main PalmPage, but any suggestions or valid arguments made there could then be integrated into the main PalmPage. I think a little note on the main page encouraging use of the discussion tab might be necessary until people get in the groove.
- Or, I just had another thought. What do you think about another icon signifying a "temporary" name for an as yet undescribed species? Or something to that affect. Or (I'm still thinking) maybe placing an icon (like a green checkmark) next to those that are accepted by Kew instead, and leave all the others "naked." Now, I've confused myself. Not the first time. :-) Dypsisdean 14:29, 24 July 2007 (PDT)
- Well, you have this red icon that reminds me of a 'stop' sign; how about a yellow dot hinting at 'caution' for the temporary names? A lot of green checkmarks might be visual clutter.
- You're right of course, about the article/discussion pages, I'm still getting used to the format. Kim 15:02, 24 July 2007 (PDT)
- Seems like we are in total agreement then. I think a few "stop and caution" icons would be better (and easier) than a ton of green things everywhere. I'll look around for an appropriate icon tonight.
New Symbol
Kim, What do you think about the new symbol and description?
= Indicates a variation, unidentified, or possibly undescribed species with a trade name only. Dypsisdean 23:21, 25 July 2007 (PDT)
- Perfect! Kim 07:54, 26 July 2007 (PDT)
