Comments and Curiosities

Etymology: Specific epithet is from the Latin - stratum; pavement, as it grows on granite plates.

Syagrus stratincola is an extremely rare palm Guyana and classified vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. It is known that some stations in Guyana where it grows in a very special environment ie scrub forest on rocky outcrops on the edge savannah rocks (or inselbergs). The rocks savannas are almost bare granite domes of vegetation that rise above the forest quite spectacular. It is a small Syagrus, caespitose. Beyond its scarcity in the wild, this species has the distinction of having, to our knowledge, never been cultivated, however, seeds brought back by Jean Jacques Granville are currently growing in the garden of the Herbarium in Cayenne.
