Genus name honors: Maria Leopoldina von Österreich (1797-1826) the daughter of Emperor Francis II; Emperor of Austria. She was the Archduchess, who was married to the first Emperor of Brazil. Hence the genus name Leopoldinia "Beautiful Leopoldina"
