Free to read
Palmpedia is a free online encyclopedia.
Photos
Every photo shows its credit beside it. Palmpedia's own photos each have a page with their credit and licence; photos from other collections link to their source page, where their licence is given. Photos contributed to Palmpedia may not be reused commercially without permission. Photos shown with credit to another rights holder (a photographer or a website) may not be reused without that rights holder's permission. Photos from other collections (Wikimedia Commons, iNaturalist, GBIF and the museum and herbarium collections) keep the licence their source gives.
Texts
The articles list their references. Names, status and native ranges follow Kew's Plants of the World Online.
Older pages
Some pages are kept from the old Palmpedia wiki. These terms apply to them too.
What visitors, members and supporters get
Parts of some pages, the photo galleries beyond their first photos and some downloads can be reserved for members (a free account); for now, they are open to everyone.
- Visitors read in full every page where nothing is reserved. Where parts are reserved, visitors read the opening of every page, the lists and the genus pages, and the pages they reach from a search engine or another website, within a daily limit.
- Members (a free account) read every page in full, with the gallery and the references, download the library's files and the full-size photos, keep a "My palms" list and may send photos, corrections and proposals. A reading limit of about 300 full pages a day applies.
- Supporters are members who give to Palmpedia through the Palmpedia shop, once contributions open there. They see no reminders, and their level is shown as a badge (see "Supporting Palmpedia" below).
Accounts
One person per account: an account may not be shared. Accounts are for people aged 13 or older; to buy, to sell or to become a supporter you must be 18 or older. An account used against these terms, for example to read far more pages than a person can, or on many devices at once, may be paused or closed.
No copying, scraping or AI training
Palmpedia's texts and photos, and the collection as a whole, are protected by copyright and by the European database right (Directive 96/9/EC). You may read them and quote short passages with credit. Without written permission you may not copy texts or photos in bulk, collect pages by scraping or other automated reading, or use them to train or feed artificial intelligence. Search engines may index the pages.
Under article 4 of the EU copyright directive 2019/790, Palmpedia – Botânica Tropical LDA expressly reserves the rights to text and data mining of Palmpedia's pages, texts and photos. The reservation is also given in machine-readable form, in robots.txt and by the TDM Reservation Protocol. Copies of the texts carry invisible marks that show where they were taken (see the privacy page).
Sending photos, corrections and proposals
You keep the copyright of what you send. Send only photos you took, and documents you own or that are openly licensed. Each send asks you to confirm this with a tick: "I took these photos or own these documents, or they are openly licensed." For each batch you choose the licence:
- The Palmpedia licence (standard): Palmpedia may publish the material on palmpedia.net, in its newsletter and in posts about Palmpedia, always with credit, and may resize, crop or edit it. It may not sell it or give it to others. The licence is free, worldwide and not exclusive, and the material is removed within 30 days if you ask.
- CC BY 4.0, the Creative Commons licence that lets anyone reuse the material with credit.
Photos you send never appear in the shop, whatever their licence, unless you give separate written permission for that photo. A paper or book under someone else's copyright is used as a source for the pages and is not published, unless its rights holder agrees. People, not automatic systems, look at everything sent; when something is not used or is taken down, the reason is shown on My account.
Corrections and proposals are sent under the Palmpedia licence. What is used, photos, documents and corrections alike, is credited with the name you choose for credits. Please give only the country and the region where a photo was taken: the exact place of a wild plant is never published, and a photo that shows it is not used.
Until something you sent is accepted, you can withdraw it on My contributions. After that, you can ask there for it to be removed, and it is removed from Palmpedia within 30 days, whatever its licence; copies that others made under CC BY 4.0 remain allowed, as that licence says. If you disagree with a decision, reply on My contributions or write to us through the contact page.
Reporting a problem
Anything on Palmpedia that is wrong or unlawful can be reported to info@palmpedia.com. Every report is read by a person, and the reporter is told what was done.
Supporting Palmpedia
For now, gifts to Palmpedia go through PayPal: "Contribute" leads to Palmpedia's donation page there, and PayPal's own terms apply to the payment. A monthly or yearly gift there runs until you stop it in your PayPal account. A gift through PayPal brings no supporter level or badge: levels and badges will start with contributions through the Palmpedia shop, once they open there.
In the shop, support will be given as Silver €25, Gold €60 or Platinum €150 a year, or any amount once. A level lasts one year from the payment; a yearly support renews every year until you stop it on your shop account. Giving the same level again while it runs adds a year to it, and a higher level starts from the payment; a gift once of €25, €60 or €150 or more brings Silver, Gold or Platinum for a year. The levels give thanks: a badge on Palmpedia, your name on the supporters page if you wish, and no more reminders. Refunds: [to be decided by the owner].

The marketplace, when it opens, will have its own rules.
