Habitat and Distribution

Columbian, and Venezuelan cloud forest, at about 2000m above sea level in the Andes. of South America, primarily Colombia.

Description

A very tall, solitary, pinnate palm, up to 30m tall, with dark green leaves, that are powdery white underneath.

Culture

It endures cool and damp conditions for most of the year. An acid soil suits it best (use Miracid) together with moist, and damp conditions and of course an adequate supply of water. Opinions as to its hardiness vary. Cool, sheltered and moist. Prefers a mild temperate climate, and doesn't like hot weather. Very slow growing.

Curiosities

They are endangered in Colombia because they grow in premontane wet forest, which is premium Coffee growing country.
