Habitat and Distribution

Bahia (Brazil Northeast, Brazil, Southern America). Occurs naturally in south of Bahia State in Brazil. This palm is very rare, and the only population discovered till now is restricted to the steep slopes on the margins of Jequitinhonha River. Description

Syagrus santosii is related to Syagrus schizophylla, from which it differs by having larger fruit (2.9 to 4.6 x 2.6 to 3.8 cm), with epicarp and mesocarp usually split at the apex when ripe, bigger endocarp (2.7 to 4.2 x 2.4 to 3 cm) with homogeneous endosperm, patent leaves with greater amount of pinnae on each side of the leaf, larger pistillate flowers. Culture

Seeds germinate easily in moist sphagnum bags. Requires the same growing conditions of Syagrus schizophylla.

Etymology: Specific epitaph, in ohonnor of João Eduardo Santos.

Phenology: Flowering and fruiting during the year, but mostly in April to May and September to October.
