Habitat and Distribution
Open forests between southeastern Mexico, northern Brazil, and also Trinidad.
Description
Bactris major has a spiny trunk; in time it becomes smooth with white rings. The fruit is avoid, about 2 inch long, purple-black when ripe. The Amerindians make an alcoholic drink from the fruit.A densely clustering Bactris, with finely pinnate leaves, native to open forests between southeastern Mexico and northern Brazil. The tasty and juicy fruits are very popular in Central and South America and can be eaten raw or made into a drink.
Culture
Partial shade, sandy loam soil, needs high humidity. Plant in frost free locations.
