Habitat and Distribution
Description
Culture
Blue/silver form in Mediterranean climate:

This is a great palm for such a climate, but it never looks quite as amazing/majestic as it does in a more tropical climate. It is highly tolerant of intense, inland heat, growing fastest where it is the hottest. However, it also grows well along the coast of such a climate- but significantly more slowly and with less intense coloration. It is best to grow this palm in a well draining soil, but palms grown in dense clay soils seems to do pretty well. Keeping the soil moist sure seems to keep this palm happier.

Full sun is the best location for this palm. Unfortunately full sun often means the most intense cold exposure in the winter. It is cold tolerant down to the high 20s/-3.3C as a seedling, often being defoliated at temps below 27F/-2.77C (but usually recovers if the bud is treated well). However, as this plant matures its cold tolerance seems to improve dramatically, with some palms surviving temps down near 22F/-5.55C with only moderate leaf damage. Over winter this is one of those palms that tends to go 'into a coma' often not showing the least bit of growth for 4-6 months at a time. However, once it warms up, it is not unusual to see some palms produce up to 1-2 leaves a month (the larger the faster it grows) which is very fast for a Mediterranean climate palm.

Green form in a Mediterranean climate:

Though this form is much faster growing than the blue form in tropical climates, the opposite tends to be true in a Mediterranean climate. In fact, in most such climates, this is known as a very marginal palm, often unable to tolerate much freezing weather at all, and sulking dramatically in prolonged cool seasons. Its culture is so different from the blue-silver forms, that it seems like a totally different species. It is very rare to see this color form growing in a Mediterranean climate, and even rarer to see one in such a climate and healthy looking. This palm always seems to battling some bud-related damage problems. It is not unusual for exceptional palms that seem to be growing well to just up and die with no apparent reason.

Hey, do you guys want me to do a writeup on something like remote vs adjacent germination? I would like to contribute more.
*"Contribute???" Did I hear the word contribute? I like the sound of that word. :) It took me awhile to figure out who said it though. :) Christian, if you type 4 'tildes' (that wavy line that goes above an 'N' in Spanish), after your post, it will 'sign' your name and a date stamp. Yes, an article on remote/adjacent germination would be great. I'm thinking it could be a part of a larger detailed on going article on germination in general with pics of germination "tips and tricks." MattyB is a king germinator these days. Perhaps we could all collaborate on it. What do you think Matty?
*Christian, try editing your user page and maybe one of the palm pages you know something about. Maybe a little spiel on that dwarf D. lutescens that I know nothing about. It would give you a feel before you start on the germination thing. You will see how the pics and stuff are handled. Dypsisdean 22:52, 9 May 2007 (PDT)
*OK, I just figured out that I had forgot to put "thumb" in the code and that's why Christian's caption wasn't showing. Is that right? Is it called code? What's the term for the stuff we do in the edit tab?MattyB 08:40, 10 May 2007 (PDT)
*That's automatic. It seems after about four 'topics' being created, the software automatically makes that table of contents. Notice it has a hide feature on it if you don't like it.
*Something else I was playing around with yesterday. 'Special Pages/Preferences' I put in my email and now I get notified with a nicely laid out email when someone adds or responds in my talk page. Haven't figured it all out. It's probably time for a phone call to discuss a lot of the stuff. I'm glad you guys had a good tour and the place looks OK. *Not exactly --- I thought it would go more like #1A is now. Click on #1A to get to that zone page. I've put in a few for a sample. I put the COLD RATING DATA BASE temps in for reference. The page where you put in your entries was more for a rough high and low boundary for each zone. You would then click on the link to get to that specific zone. Otherwise all the palms would be on that one page. According to the data base C. radicalis is hardy to 20.3 which makes it hardier than than a Queen. What did you think it's hardy to. And they have Parajubaea spp varying between 22.4-28.4. But you you/ve got the general idea. I'm still working on the layout. I'm thinking it will be hard to get rid of temps entirely. At least until we get alot of things in order. That's why I put in the COLD RATING DATA in parenthesis. If you've got the temps from the SoCal guide, maybe you could put those temps in brackets after the parenthesis. That way we could see the disparities between the two. It would help decide where to eventually place things. Then we can use the Forum data too. And hopefully people will eventually use the discussion pages for the subcategories to add their experiences. Of course there is no right or wrong here, and there will be much disagreement, but the way all the different data is available now , it is really not very useful. Once we get it a little more set up with a few of the common palms in there, I'll let Geoff and Steve in SoCal know about it. Maybe they will like it and get involved. Then Geoff might think about uploading some pics as well.
*Have you checked out the test forum site yet? I'm really curious to know what you think, and if it is working and asking for your new password, etc.
*What do you think about the new addition to the main page? I could make one that cycled through 2 or three times and then stopped.

organization
So, a shuffled about the site a bit... not sure how things are organized yet. Are you eventually going to have an alphabetical listing of palms where one can upload palm photos to?... or is there one already. I see a list of downloaded palms, but not obvious rhyme or reason to it.
*Hey Geoff, at least you made it here. I don't know how you missed the main Encyclopedia though. Go to the main page and click right after the green revolving arrow that says 'click here.' Also, remember that communications need to be signed or nobody can guess who they are from. I sent you an emai explaining more. Dypsisdean 16:49, 18 May 2007 (PDT)

Undo?
So...let's say you upload the wrong file and want to remove it. I've clicked a lot of pages, but haven't found much in the way of instrux. Clue? And where do you place the codes for thumbs or pixels? Kim 17:56, 21 May 2007 (PDT)
*Check out the 'special pages' section. In there you will see a selection for 'Gallery of new files,' 'File list,' and many other useful items including personal preferrences. However, you can always click on 'recent changes" on the left of every page for everything new that's been done, including uploads. If you make a mistake, and upload the wrong file, any file given the same name when uploading will overwrite the existing one. For any page there will be an edit tab which takes you to where you can edit text as well as the image tags, such as pixels, and thumb location and size. If you click edit on any page with photos, you will be able to see where you place the code for tweaking the options for photos. They come after the [[Image:'filename'| command. If you don't see it let me know, I'll try and be more specific.
*Also, in order to see responses to your queries when they are somewhere else than your user page, you will need to check "watch this page" Otherwise, it is to easy to forget where you have written things. If you do that you can click on 'my watchlist' at the top to see recent additions to pages you are watching. Dypsisdean 18:07, 21 May 2007 (PDT)

Hey Dean and Matt-

I have been getting your PMs and emails, I am sorry I have been busy. I think I have some more pictures and whatnot to add. I will have to find the link again where you mentioned how to add articles. Wow I am disorganized!
*Christian, No problem. I just didn't want you to think I didn't get back to you. This wiki communication can be a little weird at first. For example, If I didn't know that I just emailed you, and that was probably you respaonding in the message above, there is no indication who it is from. It is necessary to sign your name if you wish people to know who wrote it. Any help will certainly be appreciated, bu only if you have the time and desire. Or just enjoy all the photos we are adding. Dypsisdean 12:10, 22 May 2007 (PDT)

I saw the note about editing to make a thumbnail, thanx Dean. (I'm going to have to edit that caption though.: D) I understand the syntax except for one thing: (I just love the way computers can be so humbling) where is the vertical slash on the keyboard? Or is it a capital 'I' in a sans-serif font??? Hmm, looking at the preview for this post, I think I just answered my own question.
As far as my "Undo?" question, I uploaded a photo directly from my computer, just experimenting, and now I want to *delete* it; not *edit*, not *replace*. I've tried the edit feature, the special pages; not getting anywhere. Kim 12:39, 22 May 2007 (PDT)
*I had never used that "line" character before either. My son had to inform me that character is a major player in unix coding, how could I not know that? :)
*Go to the Gallery of new files. Unfortunately it is very large right now. But your photo will be there. Also, I think there is a place to screen for images that have no links to them. It would also be there. I will look for that option, because that is one I will need to know in order to delete useless photos. I'll get back to you with a link, hopefully.

Finding the file is not the problem. When I click on "My contributions" it comes up with my numerous contributions, yes, all 3 of them. But then I can't figure out how to delete it. I'll keep trying, but so far I am too thick to figure it out. Kim 13:37, 22 May 2007 (PDT)
*Don't sell yourself short so quickly. You may not have permission to delete it. Since I have Sysop privledges, i see things that others can't see. It may be that since every edit is saved with a history, all users can delete pages because they can always be brought back. However, I think images are deleted for good, so obviously, if that is the case, it would not be a good idea to let everyone delete images. In fact I bet that's it. I'll create a normal user account for me to check for that and other things. It would be a good idea for me to check on things like that. In the meantime, I'll delete your painting for you. BTW --- I didn't know you could count painting along with your other talents. :) Dypsisdean 13:46, 22 May 2007 (PDT)

*Aha! No wonder it was so difficult - no permission. In the meantime I took a ramble through the main wiki help area and learned the secret of asterisks and quotation marks. Just what I need, more distraction from work. This thing is getting very amazing very fast. Nice work Dean! And, uuhhhh, I wouldn't exactly claim painting as a talent. Kim 14:15, 22 May 2007 (PDT)
* Hey Kim, I noticed you were deleting things yesterday instead of adding. :) Anyway, yes --- I protected that main listing page because it was becoming so crucial to keep it intact at all times. So only the main page and that page are protected. I am not adding a species to the data base until I get a pic. Then when the pic is added, I give it a Palm page, and add the listing. Thanks, I corrected the C. argentata spelling. I'm glad someone noticed. Geoff has been unloading so many pics that I had to stop. I already maxed out my server's limit, and am now in the process of setting up another server with much more capacity. I have plenty of room for content, but another 200 pics and I would be out of room.
*"Annoying????" To the contrary, it's very much appreciated. After entering hundreds of names here and there, eyes get blurry and fingers get clumsy. *If proofreading is the only way I can support the project, I'm happy to do it. I might not be able to identify the palm, but I can usually spell it -- and I look it up to be sure, because I make mistakes too. It's easy to come through and sweep up after you've already done the heavy lifting. Kim 07:48, 4 June 2007 (PDT)
*Proofreading is as important a contribution as anything else. In someways, it is the most important. Every kind of search has to start with a correct spelling. *Very minor edit that I can't access: When you go to the Coccothrinax argentata page with the photos, argentata is missing a 't'. : ) I enjoy the bird sounds so much, I open that screen then move back to my usual business screens to work. It's very soothing, I wish it lasted longer. I have put a few links to Palmpedia on a popular garden web site under the palm and cycad section, specifically to your "Top Ten..." article and this morning to the main page to get some traffic coming in. *Thanks Kim, I fixed the typo. Also thanks for promoting the site. As a reward, I put the sound track on loop so it is continuous. I don't know yet how most people like it, but we'll see. I have a few tracks that I will try. So when you hear a new one, make a note. Let me know what you like. Also, we are on a new server now, and at times the site seems to hesitate a little. Let me know if you experience this as well. The tech guys keep blaming me and Hawaii internet service. Also, I think we can expect an interview from Wal, The Freck, and Clayton soon. I can't wait. And one more thing. You may miss it because I don't have a main link yet, but check under Garden Pictorials. I have started uploading some pics from Gary's Madagascar trip. *Hi -- itty bitty fixes needed: Bactris gasipaes and Bactris grayumii. It looks like Luis already picked up on this. When you click on the listed name, it takes you to a corrected name and says (redirected from -Bactris misspelled-). I wouldn't have noticed otherwise, not familiar with these. I checked another site or two to confirm spelling, I hope they are right. --- Do you know the Vietnamese guy putting up pix? Looks good, nice to have international participation. All the more reason to include metric. Oh, and I've been adding temp. conversions F to C, although there are not many. I'm still waiting for Wal's interview, no sign of him.Kim 15:44, 10 July 2007 (PDT)
*Oops, couple more: Borassus flabellifer -- looks like this one got the "redirect" treatment also. Just below that is Borassus madagascar-i-ensis and for some reason Borassus is fully spelled out, doesn't look like your work.
*You go girl. :-) I'll get to work on those corrections. There are several palms like the B. madagascarensis. There are two B. mads. Beccariophoenix and Borassus. Same with names like C. elegans. There are four. So some have to be spelled out or the page will have the same name. I think it was Luis that did the Borassus. I'll check. And no, I don't know who the Vietnam guy is. I will write him a welcome. And ditto, Wal's interview should be interesting. I hope he comes through.Dypsisdean 16:27, 10 July 2007 (PDT)
*Uuuuhhhh. Maybe you should give me temporary sysops status, (I can't believe I just wrote that) just to clean up some of the typos in the framework. 'Curiosities' is consistently misspelled throughout the framework. Is there a way to correct once and spell check the entire site? Or did you input all that manually? I don't know why I never noticed before... As I was putting in italics, something didn't feel right, so I did some reading. Sure enough, italics are used with the binomials, but not any descriptive words beyond that, and never when the genus is expressed as a plural. So I've been re-doing my edits...and learning about palms I never knew existed before.Kim 18:12, 16 July 2007 (PDT)
*Congratulations. I think you are a sysop now. It really doesn't give you all that many more privileges.
*I can't believe I did that....."curiosities." That is one I really did know how to spell. And it's not a template, so I can't change it just once. Darn!!! I've been cutting and pasting that mispelling this whole time. I wasn't sure about the proper protocol either as to the binomials and italics. I'm glad you figured it out.
*I'm not sure if that sysop status will give you enough to do what you need to. Please let me know, because there is one more step above that......Bureaucrat. That sounds really scary, doesn't it? I can change it in an instant. I don't think there is anything you can mess up, except to delete the Main Page. That's the only super bad thing. Everything else can just be rolled back.
*BTW --- I'm changing your favorite sound track. Tell me if you hate it. If you want I could send you some of those bird tracks and rain with light thunder for your PC for a little meditation between sell programs. :-) Dypsisdean 19:21, 16 July 2007 (PDT)
*When I make corrections on the index names, it breaks the link to the palm pages. For example, Becarriophoenix madagascar-i-ensis and Brahea saruk-h-anii. (I've started checking spellings against RBC Kew's World checklist of monocotyledons. I swear every time I get through the B's and C's, I think of something else...) Anyway, even inserting a space or period breaks the link, and can't decipher how to correct that and re-establish the link. Tips?Kim 21:02, 18 July 2007 (PDT)Yup, I'm going to have to learn how to deal with this, just found 2 more, B. vieillardii and Brahea paraguayensis. G'night.Kim 21:09, 18 July 2007 (PDT)
*Rather than try and explain everything, I went ahead and put a temporary fix on the Beccariophoenix. You are sharp enough to pick up on what I did there. You have stumbled upon the realization that anything new within a set of double brackets creates a new link to a new page. So just changing what displays is the easiest way. You can see how I did that. There is a way to make it all the way right, but I would have to explain it to you some other way, rather than here. And it's not worth a screencast. :-) But it has to do with the "move" tab. To do so, it is best to open up two browser windows, so you don't have to remember what you are doing, and get "lost." Open one window to the Palm Page whose spelling you will be correcting and break the link to, and the other to where you will correct the spelling. When the spelling is complete (and the link is broken), you can go to the Palm Page in the other window and "move" it to the new spelling. The tricky part is, that if you "lose" that page, you may not be able to find it again if you don't remember exactly how it was spelled. That is why keeping a separate browser window open, with it showing, will help you not to lose it. There, I guess I tried to explain it anyway. :-) For now (unless you are curious) just change the spelling as you will see in Beccariophoenix. That's easy. I'm sure you will undertand that trick. If not, let me know. I'll eventually see that it is like that and clean it up. It's really just a "house cleaning" chore. That is a trick we can use for those palms with the same names like C. elegans, as we have discussed before. It is useful for any time you wish the text to say something different than the actual link. Dypsisdean 23:30, 18 July 2007 (PDT)
*I don't think it was ever there. I noticed the underscore "_" wasn't in between the words (Trunk and diameter), and I doubt you erased it. In the Palmbox, if the underscore isn't there, in between words, it won't show. BTW --- I noticed if Asia is inserted "Oceania" actually shows (continents need to be lower case to work). I need to contact Luis. The Palmbox is sort of a "different animal." Don't quite understand it all, yet. Thanks for getting on those so quickly. I didn't want to take the time last night to do those details. It was late, and I wanted to follow Geoff's efforts getting the commentarty in on those pages.
It makes a huge difference. We drove from San Diego to San Gorgonio, started hiking at 8,000 ft and when we got up around 11,000 ft we had to walk 100 steps and rest, walk 100 steps and rest. It was brutal because we hadn't acclimated. But some people are genetically unable to acclimate, hope that's not you. == Ho'omaluhia Thread ==

Matt,
If you think it's a good idea, you could take all of those pics that I uploaded from Dave's trip and put them on the Ho'o thread as a 'gallery.' It would show you how to do that, and putting too many pics all spread out with just a short caption will make the thread really long with a lot of 'dead air.' (Just a thought) Check out the markup, and how it ends up looking on the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden I did. It's real easy to do that kind of gallery, and I think it's a good was to just display a bunch of pics. Dave's pics all start with Ho'o so would be easy to find them all. Plus I got IDs on all of them, as I think you saw. Pogobob responded to me that he thought that Syagrus looks identical to his Abreojos, and was asking for history. I told him to click on the discussion tab and get with it. No action yet though. Dypsisdean 11:59, 10 May 2007 (PDT)
Sorry, cranked back Main Page
I know you spent a lot of time trying to figure out those main page edits, but I had to send it back to the future. Something I need to try and explain when we talk is that everybody's monitor is viewing these pages in different resolutions. And that plays chaos with how the text and pics are displayed. For example on my computer, the pics on the revised mainpage were in three lines. The first line had 13 pics in it, the second had one, and the third had eight. It would look different and not symetrical on most. The way I had it set up would display evenly on all resolutions, or so I hoped and planned. It took me forever to understand, but I think I got it now. I'll explain it to you more when we talk. Good luck with the escrow and move. Dypsisdean 21:25, 10 May 2007 (PDT)

*Ooohhhh...Interesting. For me it comes up as 7-1-7-1 pictures on four lines, so I thought "Hey, let's fill this out so it looks a little better". I even photoshoped the images and cranked up the saturation so they looked as vivid as yours. No worries. One thing though; when I first started visiting this site I couldn't easily find the Encyclopedia area because it was sort of camoflagued by all the oddly spaced images. What if you just set it up with the header of the Encyclopedia link with only one image box but that image box could scroll or slideshow through the different images. Is a slideshow link in a thumb something you can do?
MattyB 09:05, 11 May 2007 (PDT)?
*Yeah, I agree with you, I had that comment before about not realizing where the link was to the encclopedia. That's why I put those little wavy palm trees there to attract attention. Do you think that helps any? I even designed a little "Click Here logo that moved across the page, stopped, and pointed at the link. but you're right, It should be very prominent. Anyway, I put all those colorful images there when I was getting started just to add some color and hoped it would entice people to click and see the quality. I've been trying to get ideas from other wikis on the web for main page layout, but it's so new, there's not much out there. Bottom line, the main page cold be vastly improved, just not sure how. When you say slideshow, am I right in assuming you mean like Spectre's site does theirs?
*One more thing. You said, "camoflagued by all the oddly spaced images." How are the images (pics) spaced on your monitor now. For me it's 8 per line, perfectly spaced. And I clicked through different resolutions and they seemed to stay that way. If the are not, then my plan isn't working either. Or did you mean something else? Dypsisdean 11:15, 11 May 2007 (PDT)

*For me there are 7 images on the first line, 1 on the second, 7 on the third, and 1 on the forth. If I remember correctly your monitor is a wide format isn't it? And yeah, I was thinking of something like Spectre does but just a thumbnail size next to the link so the link itself would be more prominent. Can you make the slide show box link to the encyclopedia no matter what image is showing at the time?MattyB 11:20, 11 May 2007 (PDT)
*Oh, I'm bummed. I cranked my monitor down in resolution and shrunk the screen so it wasn't wide screen, just for that very reason. I think I know what it might be. Have you checked your preferences? If your thumbnail preference is set differently, then the thumbnails will come out a different size, and 8 in a row won't fit. Anyway I'll work on it. This differnet res/monitot thing is complicated. I'll try switching to that 'gallery' thing I told you about. I think it's designed to get around this prob. New topic: do you have any need or desire for a Palmpedia email address? Dypsisdean 11:28, 11 May 2007 (PDT)
*My thumbnail size is @ 180px. I didn't set it to that, that's just what it was. Right now I don't see any need for a Palmpedia email. What would it be for?MattyB 11:32, 11 May 2007 (PDT)
*Absolutely no reason at all. I just have ten email accounts with '@palmpedia.net' I can use. Came with the website. :) One more question and I'll leave you alone. What resolution is your monitor set to? Hope you have a trouble free weekend. Dypsisdean 11:38, 11 May 2007 (PDT)
I don't really have the time to add descriptions at work but at home my modem sucks. I wanna add more though. Oh, I meant to ask. I started to put links in there for glossary terms. Did I do it right? All we need to do is click on them, hit edit, and add a definition? Is that right? Do I have to put the brackets around every link or can I just set up a glossary term to link to a word everytime it's typed no matter who types it and where?MattyB 09:46, 12 June 2007 (PDT)
*I thought I already added this comment, but it's gone.......oh well. I just suggested that if you get the bug at home to do a description, you could always write it, put it on a flash drive, and plug it back in at work and copy and paste. I did that on the plane ride for an article, worked great. Those flash drives are almost free these days for the small ones.I'm always willing to offer suggestions for the sake of more descriptions. :-) Dypsisdean 11:04, 12 June 2007 (PDT)
Glossary
Check it out. That's kinda what I had in mind. It's a few more clicks than I would like to get to a term, but if we do it that way the list wouldn't get horrendously long. I think most people will be getting to the definition page directly anyway by a link within an article. And, if we did it this way, on the definition page we could add a pic or two to help with the definition. Like for crownshaft or adventitious roots, etc. a pic would really help IMO. I did that quickly without a ton of thought, so if you have a better idea, speak up. Dypsisdean 10:57, 12 June 2007 (PDT)
