==Habitat and distribution==
'''Dictyosperma album''' is found in tropical areas. It is nearly extinct in habitat because of wholesale conversion to farmland.

==Description==
Dictyosperma album is a medium-sized palm generally reaching about 12 meters (36 feet) in height. Its small fruit is inedible. It is called the hurricane palm because it can suffer strong winds (usually) without being destroyed. This is quite a variable palm and propagation is by seed.

==Culture==
In tropical or semitropical climates such as Brisbane, Durban, Miami, Singapore or Honolulu (or in a warm, humid greenhouse anywhere), these are among the fastest-growing palms. They are also called Hurricane Palms because damage from storms that wreck other plants is repaired near-overnight by the palms' rapid natural growth rate.

They are tender to freezing cold, with qualifications. A brief freeze in Miami, or southeastern Brazil, for example, will cause damage, but, usually, not death, when the freeze is immediately followed by warm, humid weather. Dictyosperma are much less tolerant of the long, cool spells (nights under 50 F) that characterize winters in Mediterranean climates like Southern California, Western Australia or southwestern South Africa. In such places, they "spot out" (turn yellow with brown spots) and stop growing until warm weather comes again in spring. Likewise, they also perish quickly in true desert areas or as newly-planted specimens in "reverse dry desert winds" in warm temperate climates, such as the Santa Anas in California, or the Scirocco in southern Europe.

One possible trick for raising these palms in a warm temperate climate (the warmer the better) is to plant them among other leafy plants, like flowering gingers, bananas, or bamboo, which raise the ambient humidity and create a more-favorable microclimate. Dictyosperma album var. rubrum is possibly more tolerant to dry Mediterranean climates and has been seen growing perfectly in inland San Diego in half day sun. A nice specimen also grows in La Habra, California, about 20 miles from the sea.
This palm grows naturally in New Caledonia. Aproximated altitude: 1200 m.
==Description==
==Culture==
This is a surprisingly hardy palm in southern California; way too slow to be of any commercial landscaping value, but a great collector's palm, as long as you plan on living for several decades at least. It is hard to find palms larger than one gallon, but even a gallon size is pretty hardy, not only to most southern California cold, but also sun. Full, hot, blazing, summer, inland sun is pretty easy on one of these seedlings. But still, they seem to prefer some shade inland. This is one of the few 'tropical' palms that doesn't even brown tip, as long as given plenty of water. It appears to be wind resistant, as well. There are only 3-4 trunking palms in southern California, that I know of in 2007, but someday there will be a lot more. This palm looks just about as good here as in the tropics, which is saying a lot!

==Curiosities==
Its genus is monotypic.
Native to New Caledonia and actually the most prolific in habitat, it is very rare in cultivation due to its slow growth. It was at one time refered to as "Mackea champagne", due its wide color range - powder blue-green leaves, pinkish petiole, yellow petiole base and mint green base.
==Habitat and Distribution==
Kentiopsis piersornorum occurs in a very limited area on the east slope of Mt. Panie where it mainly occupies one valley and adjacent hills and ridges at 400-1000m elevation
==Culture==
Anthesis occurs from November through April; fruits mature from August through October. It's suggested flowering might be normally biennial or even more infrequent with the production of only a single inflorescence each time
==Habitat and Distribution==
Kentiopsis pyriformis grows on ultramafic rocks, often on unstable steep slopes.
This palm ranges from along the east coast of New Caledonia south of Yate, where it occurs in a fringe of forest 20km long an 100-500m wide from Touaourou to Goro villages at 5-100m elevation. The main population is at Goro on steep, unstable rocky slope above the mouth of the Kuebini River
==Description==
Subcanopy to emergent palm. Trunk 10-18m tall. Sometimes enlarged or buldging at the base, adventious roots visible
==Culture==
Flowers usually occur from November through February with a 15day delay between anthesis of staminate and pistillate flowers in the same triad; fruits mature from April through June. Seedlings of Kentiopsis pyriformis have been found germinating on red colluvium, rich in iron oxide. This material originates from the erosion of ultrabasic rocks (peridoite) on nearby slopes...
Subcanopy to emergent palm. Trunk 10-18m tall. Sometimes enlarged or buldging at the base, adventious roots visible
