Dean, I originally uploaded the pick as P. pusilla and when I was speaking w/ Ron McCullough (the sheriff dude) yesterday he said he thought the Phoenix at Bob's was P. theophrasti not pusilla. I checked some pictures and he's right so I just used the same link and moved it from the Pusilla page to the theophrasti page. Sorry for being so long winded.

If you think it's a good idea, you could take all of those pics that I uploaded from Dave's trip and put them on the Ho'o thread as a 'gallery.' It would show you how to do that, and putting too many pics all spread out with just a short caption will make the thread really long with a lot of 'dead air.' (Just a thought) Check out the markup, and how it ends up looking on the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden I did. It's real easy to do that kind of gallery, and I think it's a good was to just display a bunch of pics. Dave's pics all start with Ho'o so would be easy to find them all. Plus I got IDs on all of them, as I think you saw. Pogobob responded to me that he thought that Syagrus looks identical to his Abreojos, and was asking for history. I know you spent a lot of time trying to figure out those main page edits, but I had to send it back to the future. Something I need to try and explain when we talk is that everybody's monitor is viewing these pages in different resolutions. And that plays chaos with how the text and pics are displayed. For example on my computer, the pics on the revised mainpage were in three lines. The first line had 13 pics in it, the second had one, and the third had eight. It would look different and not symetrical on most. The way I had it set up would display evenly on all resolutions, or so I hoped and planned. *Ooohhhh...Interesting. For me it comes up as 7-1-7-1 pictures on four lines, so I thought "Hey, let's fill this out so it looks a little better". I even photoshoped the images and cranked up the saturation so they looked as vivid as yours. No worries. One thing though; when I first started visiting this site I couldn't easily find the Encyclopedia area because it was sort of camoflagued by all the oddly spaced images. What if you just set it up with the header of the Encyclopedia link with only one image box but that image box could scroll or slideshow through the different images. Is a slideshow link in a thumb something you can do?

*Yeah, I agree with you, I had that comment before about not realizing where the link was to the encclopedia. That's why I put those little wavy palm trees there to attract attention. Do you think that helps any? I even designed a little "Click Here logo that moved across the page, stopped, and pointed at the link. but you're right, It should be very prominent. Anyway, I put all those colorful images there when I was getting started just to add some color and hoped it would entice people to click and see the quality. I've been trying to get ideas from other wikis on the web for main page layout, but it's so new, there's not much out there. Bottom line, the main page cold be vastly improved, just not sure how. When you say slideshow, am I right in assuming you mean like Spectre's site does theirs?

Check it out. That's kinda what I had in mind. It's a few more clicks than I would like to get to a term, but if we do it that way the list wouldn't get horrendously long. I think most people will be getting to the definition page directly anyway by a link within an article. And, if we did it this way, on the definition page we could add a pic or two to help with the definition. Like for crownshaft or adventitious roots, etc. a pic would really help IMO. *Not exactly --- I thought it would go more like #1A is now. Click on #1A to get to that zone page. I've put in a few for a sample. I put the COLD RATING DATA BASE temps in for reference. The page where you put in your entries was more for a rough high and low boundary for each zone. You would then click on the link to get to that specific zone. Otherwise all the palms would be on that one page. According to the data base C. radicalis is hardy to 20.3 which makes it hardier than than a Queen. What did you think it's hardy to. And they have Parajubaea spp varying between 22.4-28.4. But you you/ve got the general idea. I'm still working on the layout. I'm thinking it will be hard to get rid of temps entirely. At least until we get alot of things in order. That's why I put in the COLD RATING DATA in parenthesis. If you've got the temps from the SoCal guide, maybe you could put those temps in brackets after the parenthesis. That way we could see the disparities between the two. It would help decide where to eventually place things.Then we can use the Forum data too. And hopefully people will eventually use the discussion pages for the subcategories to add their experiences. Of course there is no right or wrong here, and there will be much disagreement, but the way all the different data is available now , it is really not very useful. Once we get it a little more set up with a few of the common palms in there, I'll let Geoff and Steve in SoCal know about it. Maybe they will like it and get involved. Then Geoff might think about uploading some pics as well.

*Check out the 'special pages' section. In there you will see a selection for 'Gallery of new files,' 'File list,' and many other useful items including personal preferrences. However, you can always click on 'recent changes" on the left of every page for everything new that's been done, including uploads. If you make a mistake, and upload the wrong file, any file given the same name when uploading will overwrite the existing one. For any page there will be an edit tab which takes you to where you can edit text as well as the image tags, such as pixels, and thumb location and size. If you click edit on any page with photos, you will be able to see where you place the code for tweaking the options for photos. They come after the [[Image:'filename'| command. If you don't see it let me know, I'll try and be more specific.
*Also, in order to see responses to your queries when they are somewhere else than your user page, you will need to check "watch this page" Otherwise, it is to easy to forget where you have written things. (I'm going to have to edit that caption though.: D) I understand the syntax except for one thing: (I just love the way computers can be so humbling) where is the vertical slash on the keyboard? *Go to the Gallery of new files. Unfortunately it is very large right now. But your photo will be there. Also, I think there is a place to screen for images that have no links to them. *Don't sell yourself short so quickly. You may not have permission to delete it. Since I have Sysop privledges, i see things that others can't see. It may be that since every edit is saved with a history, all users can delete pages because they can always be brought back. However, I think images are deleted for good, so obviously, if that is the case, it would not be a good idea to let everyone delete images. In fact I bet that's it. I'll create a normal user account for me to check for that and other things. It would be a good idea for me to check on things like that. In the meantime, I'll delete your painting for you. Thanks, I corrected the C. argentata spelling. I'm glad someone noticed. Geoff has been unloading so many pics that I had to stop. I already maxed out my server's limit, and am now in the process of setting up another server with much more capacity. *Rather than try and explain everything, I went ahead and put a temporary fix on the Beccariophoenix. You are sharp enough to pick up on what I did there. You have stumbled upon the realization that anything new within a set of double brackets creates a new link to a new page. So just changing what displays is the easiest way. You can see how I did that. There is a way to make it all the way right, but I would have to explain it to you some other way, rather than here. And it's not worth a screencast. :-) But it has to do with the "move" tab. To do so, it is best to open up two browser windows, so you don't have to remember what you are doing, and get "lost." Open one window to the Palm Page whose spelling you will be correcting and break the link to, and the other to where you will correct the spelling. When the spelling is complete (and the link is broken), you can go to the Palm Page in the other window and "move" it to the new spelling. The tricky part is, that if you "lose" that page, you may not be able to find it again if you don't remember exactly how it was spelled. That is why keeping a separate browser window open, with it showing, will help you not to lose it. There, I guess I tried to explain it anyway. :-) For now (unless you are curious) just change the spelling as you will see in Beccariophoenix. That's easy. I'm sure you will undertand that trick. If not, let me know. I'll eventually see that it is like that and clean it up. It's really just a "house cleaning" chore. That is a trick we can use for those palms with the same names like C. elegans, as we have discussed before. *Not exactly --- I thought it would go more like #1A is now. Click on #1A to get to that zone page. I've put in a few for a sample. I put the COLD RATING DATA BASE temps in for reference. The page where you put in your entries was more for a rough high and low boundary for each zone. You would then click on the link to get to that specific zone. Otherwise all the palms would be on that one page. According to the data base C. radicalis is hardy to 20.3 which makes it hardier than than a Queen. What did you think it's hardy to. And they have Parajubaea spp varying between 22.4-28.4. But you you/ve got the general idea. I'm still working on the layout. I'm thinking it will be hard to get rid of temps entirely. At least until we get alot of things in order. That's why I put in the COLD RATING DATA in parenthesis. If you've got the temps from the SoCal guide, maybe you could put those temps in brackets after the parenthesis. That way we could see the disparities between the two. It would help decide where to eventually place things.Then we can use the Forum data too. And hopefully people will eventually use the discussion pages for the subcategories to add their experiences. Of course there is no right or wrong here, and there will be much disagreement, but the way all the different data is available now , it is really not very useful. Once we get it a little more set up with a few of the common palms in there, I'll let Geoff and Steve in SoCal know about it. Maybe they will like it and get involved. Then Geoff might think about uploading some pics as well.

*Check out the 'special pages' section. In there you will see a selection for 'Gallery of new files,' 'File list,' and many other useful items including personal preferrences. However, you can always click on 'recent changes" on the left of every page for everything new that's been done, including uploads. If you make a mistake, and upload the wrong file, any file given the same name when uploading will overwrite the existing one. For any page there will be an edit tab which takes you to where you can edit text as well as the image tags, such as pixels, and thumb location and size. If you click edit on any page with photos, you will be able to see where you place the code for tweaking the options for photos. They come after the [[Image:'filename'| command. If you don't see it let me know, I'll try and be more specific.
*Also, in order to see responses to your queries when they are somewhere else than your user page, you will need to check "watch this page" Otherwise, it is to easy to forget where you have written things. *Rather than try and explain everything, I went ahead and put a temporary fix on the Beccariophoenix. You are sharp enough to pick up on what I did there. You have stumbled upon the realization that anything new within a set of double brackets creates a new link to a new page. So just changing what displays is the easiest way. You can see how I did that. There is a way to make it all the way right, but I would have to explain it to you some other way, rather than here. And it's not worth a screencast. :-) But it has to do with the "move" tab. To do so, it is best to open up two browser windows, so you don't have to remember what you are doing, and get "lost." Open one window to the Palm Page whose spelling you will be correcting and break the link to, and the other to where you will correct the spelling. When the spelling is complete (and the link is broken), you can go to the Palm Page in the other window and "move" it to the new spelling. The tricky part is, that if you "lose" that page, you may not be able to find it again if you don't remember exactly how it was spelled. That is why keeping a separate browser window open, with it showing, will help you not to lose it. There, I guess I tried to explain it anyway. :-) For now (unless you are curious) just change the spelling as you will see in Beccariophoenix. That's easy. I'm sure you will undertand that trick. If not, let me know. I'll eventually see that it is like that and clean it up. It's really just a "house cleaning" chore. That is a trick we can use for those palms with the same names like C. elegans, as we have discussed before. *Not exactly --- I thought it would go more like #1A is now. Click on #1A to get to that zone page. I've put in a few for a sample. I put the COLD RATING DATA BASE temps in for reference. The page where you put in your entries was more for a rough high and low boundary for each zone. You would then click on the link to get to that specific zone. Otherwise all the palms would be on that one page. According to the data base C. radicalis is hardy to 20.3 which makes it hardier than than a Queen. What did you think it's hardy to. And they have Parajubaea spp varying between 22.4-28.4. But you you/ve got the general idea. I'm still working on the layout. I'm thinking it will be hard to get rid of temps entirely. At least until we get alot of things in order. That's why I put in the COLD RATING DATA in parenthesis. If you've got the temps from the SoCal guide, maybe you could put those temps in brackets after the parenthesis. That way we could see the disparities between the two. It would help decide where to eventually place things.Then we can use the Forum data too. And hopefully people will eventually use the discussion pages for the subcategories to add their experiences. Of course there is no right or wrong here, and there will be much disagreement, but the way all the different data is available now , it is really not very useful. Once we get it a little more set up with a few of the common palms in there, I'll let Geoff and Steve in SoCal know about it. Maybe they will like it and get involved. Then Geoff might think about uploading some pics as well.

*Check out the 'special pages' section. In there you will see a selection for 'Gallery of new files,' 'File list,' and many other useful items including personal preferrences. However, you can always click on 'recent changes" on the left of every page for everything new that's been done, including uploads. If you make a mistake, and upload the wrong file, any file given the same name when uploading will overwrite the existing one. For any page there will be an edit tab which takes you to where you can edit text as well as the image tags, such as pixels, and thumb location and size. If you click edit on any page with photos, you will be able to see where you place the code for tweaking the options for photos. They come after the [[Image:'filename'| command. If you don't see it let me know, I'll try and be more specific.
*Also, in order to see responses to your queries when they are somewhere else than your user page, you will need to check "watch this page" Otherwise, it is to easy to forget where you have written things. *Rather than try and explain everything, I went ahead and put a temporary fix on the Beccariophoenix. You are sharp enough to pick up on what I did there. You have stumbled upon the realization that anything new within a set of double brackets creates a new link to a new page. So just changing what displays is the easiest way. You can see how I did that. There is a way to make it all the way right, but I would have to explain it to you some other way, rather than here. And it's not worth a screencast. :-) But it has to do with the "move" tab. To do so, it is best to open up two browser windows, so you don't have to remember what you are doing, and get "lost." Open one window to the Palm Page whose spelling you will be correcting and break the link to, and the other to where you will correct the spelling. When the spelling is complete (and the link is broken), you can go to the Palm Page in the other window and "move" it to the new spelling. The tricky part is, that if you "lose" that page, you may not be able to find it again if you don't remember exactly how it was spelled. That is why keeping a separate browser window open, with it showing, will help you not to lose it. There, I guess I tried to explain it anyway. :-) For now (unless you are curious) just change the spelling as you will see in Beccariophoenix. That's easy. I'm sure you will undertand that trick. If not, let me know. I'll eventually see that it is like that and clean it up. It's really just a "house cleaning" chore. That is a trick we can use for those palms with the same names like C. elegans, as we have discussed before. *The trick for altitude is to arrive a few days ahead to get acclimated. We'll go camp at 9,000 ft. for 2 nights and do short day hikes at 10-11,000 ft. before actually hiking Whitney. It makes a huge difference. We drove from San Diego to San Gorgonio, started hiking at 8,000 ft and when we got up around 11,000 ft we had to walk 100 steps and rest, walk 100 steps and rest. It was brutal because we hadn't acclimated. But some people are genetically unable to acclimate, hope that's not you. Have you ever gone on a snowboard trip, and you feel completely whipped the first day, but the third day you're ripping? Lives naturally in sandy soil, sometimes salty, sandy soil, along the coast of southern Brazil.

==Description==
Plumose-leaved, monoecious stemless to short-stemmed clustering (bifurcating) palm with no sharp edges (what I call 'user-friendly'). Leaflets are deep green with a prominent mid-rib and curl to various degrees depending on plant, age and climate. Flowers look sort of like corn-cobs on a long stick (peduncle). Very old plants can have short stems and can grow up to 8'/2.4m tall (rare in cultivation to be that large) and 15'/4.5m wide (also rare in cultivation).

==Culture==
Although this palm normally grows in sandy soil, it seems able to adapt to many types of soils, even heavy clay. It prefers ample amounts of water, but once established, it can be fairly drought resistant. This palm is somewhat cold hardy and can withstand freezes down to 25F/-3.88C. Colder temps can damage the plant severely, but it will often recover from brief freezes down to nearly 20F/-6.66C. In addition to being cold and drought tolerant, it is seemingly heat resistant as well. A.arenaria can thrive in the dry, hot, inland southern California deserts as well as the cold, salty beaches along the coast. It is also one of the most salt tolerant palms grown in cultivation.
It survives full sun to fairly dense shade. Rarely does it brown tip, even if watered with poor quality city water. However, it is prone to bud damage if watered excessively by sprinklers from above (best to water this one with a drip system, if possible, or rain water/deionized water). The bud damage from such watering practices may not be as severe as what is typically seen in many other species, but will often result in bizarre leaves with the leaflets folding back on themselves (which can be unsightly).

As a seedling, A. arenaria is an agonizingly slow-growing plant, at least when grown in a Mediterranean climate. But its growth will increase dramatically when placed in a greenhouse, or warm, humid climate. Once it reaches 15 gallon size, its growth rate in a Mediterranean climate would still be considered slow-growing, but would be faster than the painfully slow pace during its seedling stage.

These palms are monoeceious with small yellow/orange flowers emerging from beneath the crownshaft that bear orange to dark red ovoid fruit similar to Areca catechu.

''A. myolensis'' grows in the mountainous region west of Cairns in N.W. Queensland on the Atherton Tableland. Confined mainly to riversides and forest.

With a sometimes tinge of blue to it's elegant crownshaft, it is a bit diminuative but otherwise similar to the common ''A. cunninghamiana'', perhaps with droopier leaflets.
== Culture ==
It would follow from it's native location that this palm should be a bit more cold hardy than the rest of the genus with an equal affinity for copious amounts of water.

At least in Southern California, this palm is NOT as cold hardy as ''A. cunninghamiana'', but is about the same as the rest of the ''Archontophoenix'' group. All pretty much turn to brown crispy structures, while ''A. cunninghamiana'' has a few more degrees of cold tolerance (which makes a huge difference as those few degrees of tolerance can mean the difference between life and death). An entire ''Archontophoenix'' collection, save maybe one of these (though totally defoliated) and all the ''A. cunninghamiana'', was wiped out by the Jan 07 freeze in Los Angeles.

It is one of, if not the most, rare and endangered species of the genus in its natural environment.

It is a monoecious, pinnate palm that is relatively sparsely leaved and grows to a height of only about 10'-12'/3-3.6m. New leaf color is red-orange.

==Culture==
This is a decidedly tropical palm, marginal in subtropical climates like South Florida. Does great in Hawaii, though, where it is rapidly becoming a common "collector's" plant among palm enthusiasts. Most were disappointed when it lost its monotypic status, so it may be a little less sought after now. Needs lots of water and constant warmth.

This slower growing solitary emergant palm can grow to 40 ft/12 m but rarely has a trunk thicker than 6 inches/15 cm. It's long steaked crownshaft adds to a gorgeous overall apperance. The unusual flowering habit and subsequent black fruit are additional pleasing aesthetics of another exceptional palm from New Caledonia.
