Realistically, this zone is not really a subtropical zone, but more of a humid temperate zone... it is listed here as subtropical because it is a continuum of zones that are consistently humid, and tend to not have prolonged cool periods- either cold or warm. Summers are hot and humid and nights tend to be relatively warm and humid, too. Winters are much different, though, and can be extremely cold (colder lows than 'equivalent' Mediterranean climates). However, cold temps are often quickly replaced by warm temps, especially as you go move from zone to zone... this is in contrast to Mediterranean climates which tend to be more moderate, with less extreme highs and lows... but most importantly have very long cool periods characterized by low humidity.

Since I don't live in a subtropical climate, it would be hard for me to comment intelligently on some of these palms... but I was not aware that Brahea edulis performed that well in such a climate. Brahea armata, for that matter, either. I know some have gotten to to survive, but seems unlikely that they would with in climates where these other ones would.Palmbob 16:55, 22 July 2007 (PDT)

Several sources, including the newest Betrock's guide to Cold hardy palms, lists Rhapidophyllum as hardy to -5F... which is significantly more cold hardy than S minor. This book is written from a subtropical point of view, so I think it would apply to this list.Palmbob 17:02, 22 July 2007 (PDT)

*Butia paraguayensis
*Butia purpurescens
*Washingtonia robusta (22/-5.6)
No way is Trachycarpus martianus nearly as cold hardy as a Washingtonia... mine was defoliated completely this winter, and my neighbor's Washingtonias has no damage at all. Rhapis humilis is probably less cold hardy, too, but not sure about that. I seriously doubt Hyphaene petersiana is more cold hardy, either, but no personal experience with that one... the other Hyphaenes sure aren't. To me, this is a very narrow zone, as I rarely see damage on Washingtonias without similar damage to P canariensis... I personally would rate them equal, with most of the plants listed here as being less hardy than either.

Seems odd to include Juania in a subtropical list as I know of no subtropical climate in which this species can be grown.. do you?Palmbob 16:53, 22 July 2007 (PDT)

Hey, do you guys want me to do a writeup on something like remote vs adjacent germination? I would like to contribute more.
*"Contribute???" Did I hear the word contribute? I like the sound of that word. :) It took me awhile to figure out who said it though. :) Christian, if you type 4 'tildes' (that wavy line that goes above an 'N' in Spanish), after your post, it will 'sign' your name and a date stamp. Yes, an article on remote/adjacent germination would be great. I'm thinking it could be a part of a larger detailed on going article on germination in general with pics of germination "tips and tricks." MattyB is a king germinator these days. Perhaps we could all collaborate on it. What do you think Matty?
*Christian, try editing your user page and maybe one of the palm pages you know something about. Maybe a little spiel on that dwarf D. lutescens that I know nothing about. It would give you a feel before you start on the germination thing. You will see how the pics and stuff are handled. Dypsisdean 22:52, 9 May 2007 (PDT)
*OK, I just figured out that I had forgot to put "thumb" in the code and that's why Christian's caption wasn't showing. Is that right? Is it called code? What's the term for the stuff we do in the edit tab?MattyB 08:40, 10 May 2007 (PDT)
Hey Dean and Matt-

I have been getting your PMs and emails, I am sorry I have been busy. I think I have some more pictures and whatnot to add. I will have to find the link again where you mentioned how to add articles. Wow I am disorganized!
*Christian, No problem. I just didn't want you to think I didn't get back to you. This wiki communication can be a little weird at first. For example, If I didn't know that I just emailed you, and that was probably you respaonding in the message above, there is no indication who it is from. It is necessary to sign your name if you wish people to know who wrote it. Any help will certainly be appreciated, bu only if you have the time and desire. Or just enjoy all the photos we are adding. Dypsisdean 12:10, 22 May 2007 (PDT)

I saw the note about editing to make a thumbnail, thanx Dean. (I'm going to have to edit that caption though.: D) I understand the syntax except for one thing: (I just love the way computers can be so humbling) where is the vertical slash on the keyboard? Or is it a capital 'I' in a sans-serif font??? Hmm, looking at the preview for this post, I think I just answered my own question.
As far as my "Undo?" question, I uploaded a photo directly from my computer, just experimenting, and now I want to *delete* it; not *edit*, not *replace*. I've tried the edit feature, the special pages; not getting anywhere. Kim 12:39, 22 May 2007 (PDT)
*I had never used that "line" character before either. My son had to inform me that character is a major player in unix coding, how could I not know that? :)
*Go to the Gallery of new files. Unfortunately it is very large right now. But your photo will be there. Also, I think there is a place to screen for images that have no links to them. It would also be there. I will look for that option, because that is one I will need to know in order to delete useless photos. I'll get back to you with a link, hopefully.

Finding the file is not the problem. When I click on "My contributions" it comes up with my numerous contributions, yes, all 3 of them. But then I can't figure out how to delete it. I'll keep trying, but so far I am too thick to figure it out. Kim 13:37, 22 May 2007 (PDT)
*Don't sell yourself short so quickly. You may not have permission to delete it. Since I have Sysop privledges, i see things that others can't see. It may be that since every edit is saved with a history, all users can delete pages because they can always be brought back. However, I think images are deleted for good, so obviously, if that is the case, it would not be a good idea to let everyone delete images. In fact I bet that's it. I'll create a normal user account for me to check for that and other things. It would be a good idea for me to check on things like that. In the meantime, I'll delete your painting for you. BTW --- I didn't know you could count painting along with your other talents. :) Dypsisdean 13:46, 22 May 2007 (PDT)

*Aha! No wonder it was so difficult - no permission. In the meantime I took a ramble through the main wiki help area and learned the secret of asterisks and quotation marks. Just what I need, more distraction from work. This thing is getting very amazing very fast. Nice work Dean! And, uuhhhh, I wouldn't exactly claim painting as a talent. Kim 14:15, 22 May 2007 (PDT)

*Am I correct that general users cannot edit the listings in the main Encyclopedia? (Check sp. on Coccothrinax argentata) Is it possible to add a species? i.e. argentea, fragrans? Kim 09:51, 29 May 2007 (PDT)
* Hey Kim, I noticed you were deleting things yesterday instead of adding. :) Anyway, yes --- I protected that main listing page because it was becoming so crucial to keep it intact at all times. So only the main page and that page are protected. I am not adding a species to the data base until I get a pic. Then when the pic is added, I give it a Palm page, and add the listing. Thanks, I corrected the C. argentata spelling. I'm glad someone noticed. Geoff has been unloading so many pics that I had to stop. I already maxed out my server's limit, and am now in the process of setting up another server with much more capacity. I have plenty of room for content, but another 200 pics and I would be out of room.

*If proofreading is the only way I can support the project, I'm happy to do it. I might not be able to identify the palm, but I can usually spell it -- and I look it up to be sure, because I make mistakes too. It's easy to come through and sweep up after you've already done the heavy lifting. These are just jumping out at me when I'm surfing the info, I haven't gone through the list systematically, only have a few minutes at a time to look around. Kim 07:48, 4 June 2007 (PDT)
*Proofreading is as important a contribution as anything else. In someways, it is the most important. Every kind of search has to start with a correct spelling. Any mistakes you see on other pages you can correct yourself. So feel free to do so when you notice something. If you can make a sentence flow better, or the grammar is shakey, do your thing. Yes, an article on remote/adjacent germination would be great. I'm thinking it could be a part of a larger detailed on going article on germination in general with pics of germination "tips and tricks." MattyB is a king germinator these days.
