Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the SE Andes of Ecuador.Description
Subcanopy palm. Stem solitary, 5-8 m tall and 4-7 cm in diameter, smooth. Leaves 1.5-2.5 m long; pinnae 25-30 on each side, entire, borne horizontally or slightly pendulous, glabrous on both sides, the central ones 55-70 cm long and 3.5-4.5 cm wide, with about 10 prominent veins. Inflorescences 1-3 per node; peduncle 10-20 cm long; rachis 5-20 cm long; branches 8-20; male inflorescence branches to 12 cm long; female branches to 45 cm long in fruit. Male flowers hairy, 7-8 mm long, with 12-15 stamens. Female flowers dispersed along the branches, 10-12 mm long. Fruit about 2 cm long and 1.5 cm in diameter, with a rusty indument.
