Comments and Curiosities
Conservation: Pholidocarpus majadum is a widespread under collected palm, that is endemic to Borneo. While this species does not meet the criteria for a threatened category, it resides within areas and habitats that are presently under considerable pressure. It is said to be under-collected, so more monitoring of this species is needed in order to assign the correct category. If these threats continue it could warrant a threatened category, but considering the wide range, occurrence in some protected areas and relatively recent collections a rating of Least Concern is given.
A large, stately palm to about 15 m (49 ft.) tall, native to lowland rainforests and swamps on the island of Borneo. Pholidocarpus is closely related to Livistona but easily distinguished by its large, scaly seeds. The Kepang Palm is very rare in cultivation but not difficult to grow in the humid tropics. It does particularly well on wet or swampy ground. (RPS.com)
