Types of roots

Adventitious

The adventitious succeed the radicle, they form the most important root system for the palm.

Prop and Stilt

This type of roots provide extra support for the plant. They grow from the lower part of the trunk down into the ground. Some palms that produce this kind of root are:

Prop roots of a palm in the Costa Rican rainforest. Probably a Socratea sp.
Spiny stilt roots of Verschaffeltia spledida



Radicle

The first root that appears on seedlings is the radicle also known as seminal or primary; It provides anchorage and uptake nutrients and water.
