Prestoea ensiformis: These grow in Costa Rica, Panama, Peru and the Andean slopes of Columbia and Ecuador in premontane and montane rain forest on mountain hillsides from 350 m to 1800 m. They have clustered stems or single trunked being 2.5 m to 9 m tall, Stems are 3-13 cm thick, rachis are 0.4-2.3 m long with 36-49 leaflets per side,no crown shafts and have open sheaths, Purple black fruit 7-1 cm in diameter.

Etymology: genus name in honor of Henry Prestoe (1842–1923), English botanist and traveler, who collected the plant in Trinidad.
