Habitat and Distribution

Calyptrocalyx arfakianus is endemic to Irian Jaya (western New Guinea) rainforest.

Fleckers Botanical Garden, Queensland, Australia. Photo by Michael Pascall, edric.

Description

Small/medium, solitary, understory palm to about 2.5 m (8ft) tall, with large leaves that have irregular width leaflets.

Calyptrocalyx arfakianus is distinguished by the combination of a solitary habit, small stature, multi-spiked inflorescence, globose to subglobose black fruit, and ruminate endosperm. The original description of Paralinospadix pachystachys from Waigeo Island matches C. arfakianus very closely, and despite the loss of the type specimen, Stein 128 (Bt), the name is placed as a synonym of C. arfakianus. Editing by edric.

Culture

Cold Hardiness Zone: 11, warm, sheltered and moist. Tropics-sub-tropics.
