Habitat and Distribution

Areca guppyana is found in New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Trinidad, West Indies.
Trinidad, West Indies.
Of the primary forest.

Description

Endemic to the Solomon Islands, this is a thin trunked solitary, understory palm with short, arching deep green, only partially divided leaves, this species stands on stilt roots. Fruit are deep red and edible (but can be somewhat narcotic, sort of like Areca catechu). Planted on New Guinea around traditional burial grounds. Never gets to be a very tall palm.
