Description
Very ornamental suckering palmate palm with remarkably white petioles and undersides of leaves. leaves are much more divided and spread out than in the other Chuniophoenix: nana. No spines are sharp edges on this plant. Stems are about 4-5cm in diameter. This palm grows to well over 10' tall in a tropical climate, but it is unknown how tall it can grow in a Mediterranean climate such as Southern California, where its growth rate is a tiny fraction of what it is in the tropics.Palmbob 17:52, 18 September 2007 (PDT)
Southern California experience:
This is one of two species of Chuniophoenix, and though it is the larger one, it is by far the more slow-growing. Palms take many years to even reach 4' in height, which is only 1/2 or less of their potential height. It is surprisingly cold tolerant handling temps in the mid 20Fs for extended periods of time with little or no damage. I don't think the true low temp is known yet. It likes a lot of water, and is not too happy about full sun, particularly in inland climates. Wind shreds the leaves a bit, but it is surprisingly tolerant otherwise.Palmbob 17:49, 18 September 2007 (PDT)
Tightly suckering palmate plant up to 5' tall (though usually shorter). Leaflets end in points and minimal fiber on stems. Somewhat resembles a Rhapis species. Stems about 1/4" inch in diameter and no spines. Very 'user-friendly' palm. Palmbob 17:34, 18 September 2007 (PDT)
Southern California experience:
THis is a very underused palm in southern California and remarkably cold tolerant and easy to grow. It is a pretty slow grower, and much faster in a tropical climate... but it is not an expensive palm and larger plants can be purchased from Hawaiian sources and shipped over. It is at least cold hardy to the mid 20s, and though it may nor rival Rhapis excelsa in cold hardiness, it is indeed close. This is a good palm for smaller areas- it will never outgrow an area, and it does prefer mostly filtered light... though along the coast or milder climates, it does seem to tolerate full sun for at least part of the day. Reportedly it performs tolerably as an indoor palm, but I have no experience with that. Southern California experience: this is one of the most attractive and sought after suckering Chamaedoreas for southern California.. it is not an easy grow, even for those near the coast. It is not very cold tolerant, maybe tolerating 1-2 degrees below freezing, and only briefly. Colder temps will cause severe leaf damage, and this often leads to fungal rot. It is a slow growing palm, only sending up a shoot now and then. The more water it gets, the happier it is. It also seems to like fertilization, even in our richer, clayey soils. Wind is not its friend, and care should be taken in growing it in a well protected location. Brown tipping is a constant malady possibly associated with our low humidity, poor water quality or any other stresses.
Palmbob_blocked_oldhttps://palmpedia.net/wiki/Chamaedorea_fragransChamaedorea fragrans2007-09-19T00:00:31Z
Palmbob_blocked_old:

Southern California Experience:
This is easily the most hardy and easy to grow of the Calamus species in southern California, showing surprising hardiness for a rattan (some rattans, such as Plectocomia himalayana are even more cold hardy, but most are not). It can tolerate temps down into the high 20Fs without too much leaf damage, and seems fairly non-picky about soil types as well. However, it does resent full sun, or even partial afternoon/midday sun, particularly inland, and tends to brown-tip badly if exposed to winds. This rattan can be grown as a smaller, self-supporting palm without the need for draping it or having it climb all over the yard, by constantly trimming it to a managable height. Further growth stops, but new suckers are constantly being produced. If allowed to grow unpruned, it will not develop into a massive palm, at least here in So Cal, but usually grows only to 8' or more high... however it produces long, hooked cirrhi that can be very dangerous for passersby. The plant itself is moderately armed with spines, but it's the whips and cirrhi that are the most troublesome. If grown in a moderate climate with wind and sun protection, it can be a very ornamental palm.
