Comments and Curiosities

Dugand himself initially assigned his new species to Socratea; the data labels on the type bear the name "Socratea hecatonandra Dugand", a combination he never published. Annotation labels were added later with the name Metasocratea hecatonandra Dugand. (R. Bernal-Gonzalez. 1986)/Palmweb. Editing by edric.

A stunning, tall and elegant palm with a slender, smooth trunk than can reach 20 m tall, is supported by a cone of strong stilt roots and carries a magnificent, long, bluish-gray crownshaft which holds up to 7 large, plumose, spreading, dark green leaves. The large leaflets are divided into several broad, wedge-shaped segments with stiff, jagged tips. It is native to lowland rainforests between sea level and 750 m in western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador. In cultivation it does best in a humid, mild tropical climate. (RPS.com)
