PalmPests

Scot Nelson is a Specialist in Plant Pathology with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR). Residing in Hilo, he is responsible for plant disease education and research programs throughout the State of Hawaii. Scot is the website director of: www.plant-doctor.net, a new, interactive website with information about plant diseases and pests.

His photos of palm diseases and pests represent data collected from plant clinics held at CTAHR over the last 11 years. Bring your “sick” fronds for Scot to analyze and identify the pest or disease afflicting your palms. It is best to bring specimens showing “early symptoms.”

HO'OWAIWAI GARDENS - June 7, 2009 - Meeting

HIPS latest get together found us at the fabulous gardens of Ho'owaiwai. Rich in rare and mature palms the original property encompassed 150 gorgeous acres. It has been split into 3 parcels, with the main part providing the tour. The property is at the 900 foot elevation and was once a part of the sugar cane plantations of the Hamakua Coast. It sits close to and above another world class garden at Onamea Bay - The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden.

The landscaping on the property, begun in 1982, includes broad expanses of of lawn and some of the rarest and most interesting palms in the world. In 1987, the original owner acquired a collection of 50,000 palm seeds from South America, collected by IPS member De Armand Hull. The late, Ken Foster, a former IPS president and HIPS member, served as a consultant to oversee the germination, care, feeding and placement of the palms. Most of the palms were planted 20-24 years ago, and have thrived in the lush environment of the area, fulfilling the plan "to create an exotic tropical garden in which to work and play."
