Comments and Curiosities

Until proven otherwise, this palm is officially classified as Dypsis madagascariensis, one of the most variable of all the Dypsis species. Even this 'species' sometimes suckers, and sometimes is solitary. It looks and grows just like D madagascariensis.... so it probably is... but once studies are done on the flowers perhaps it will eventually earn its own official species name. (Geoff Stein)

"Dypsis "Mahajanga" is just a form of D. madagascariensis. It seems to have a more plumose leaf than the "regular" form. Here at Leu Gardens it also has been more cold hardy. We have a clump of D. "Mahajanga" and D. madagascariensis. Twice when we have dropped into the upper 20's in the last 10 years, the D. "Mahajanga" wasn't really bothered, while D. madagascariensis was burned and they are only about 25 ft apart." (Eric; Botanist - H.P. Leu Gardens, Orlando, FL.)
