CULTURAL INFORMATION FOR THE MARGINAL SUB-TROPICS

Geoff Stein - Author & Editor

When Geoff Stein edited and published the second edition of Palms For Southern California over 20 years ago, there were relatively few palms that were known to grow outdoors in California. And his publication was just about the only reference available on the subject. There was no internet, and few places to buy these palms. Those early editions listed about 100 species. By the fourth edition, completed in 2005, there were over 400 species - hybrids and cultivars included.

Since then, more new species have been made available, and many of these are potential palms for an outdoor garden in California. There are now many nurseries where these previously rare and unknown species can be purchased. Around 500 species of palms are now periodically available that will grow in California gardens if given the right conditions. This web edition is not a new revision, but a whole new "publication," with updated information, a new format, photos instead of drawings, and including all of California as well.

Diligently referring to this reference will save you money, time, and sadness since you will be much more successful as one of those gardeners who likes to push the envelope and plant the rare and exotic new species.

Unless labeled otherwise, all photos by Geoff Stein and use of such photos not allowed without permission.
'''Common Name''': Bismarck Palm

'''''Bismarckia nobilis''''' is a large, solitary Madagascan palm with immense mildly costapalmate, stiff leaves of either dull green or various shades of waxy blue or grey. It is widely considered one of the most ornamental and majestic palms one can grow in California. Green forms of this palm grow rapidly in the tropics, but are rather marginal in most areas of California, only managing to grow to adulthood in the most ideal climates (frost-free coastal, or nearly frost free inland low deserts). However, the blue, grey and white forms are much hardier and faster growing in a Mediterranean climate and perform excellently along the coast as well as far inland as the low deserts. Damage to young plants during moderate to severe frosts often results in complete defoliation, but surprisingly many still recover. Plant this one where you want it (remembering it gets enormous) because it is a very hard palm to transplant successfully (root trauma often results in the death of the palm). Available from single leaf seedling to large boxes nowadays. Very commonly available, even at large home garden centers sometimes.
*'''Leaf Shape and Color''': palmate to mildly costapalmate, very stiff and often with a waxy coating; color ranges from green (to lime green if struggling) to the more hardy colors of grey, grey-green, blue-green to silver blue
*'''Petiole''': no teeth but extremely sharp; deeply channeled; 4'-8' long; leaf base very wide, with wide split where attaches to trunk
*'''Reproduction''': dioecious; best to germinate seeds in a deep pot (first root tends to be pretty long)
*'''Inflorescence''': stiff, rope-like and branched
*'''Disease Problems''': few in California
*'''Transplanting?''': very difficult to transplant once forming a trunk- best to plant where you want it forever
'''''Acanthophoenix crinita''''' is a thin-trunked, pinnate palm from Reunion Island, east of Madagascar. Though from a decidedly tropical climate, this palm has surprising cold tolerance and does surprisingly well in a Mediterranean climate, growing to maturity in several California locations. Though not as colorful as its cousin, Acanthophoenix rubra, it is far hardier and is a fascinating spiny palm for partially sunny areas of the warmer areas of southern California.

When Geoff Stein edited and published the second edition of '''''Palms For Southern California''''' over 20 years ago, there were relatively few palms that were known to grow outdoors in California.

When Geoff Stein edited and published the second edition of '''''Palms For Southern California''''' over 20 years ago, there were relatively few palms that were known to grow outdoors in California.

When Geoff Stein edited and published the second edition of '''''Palms For Southern California''''' over 20 years ago, there were relatively few palms that were known to grow outdoors in California.
